Memories, Dreams, Reflections is nearly a sacred text for students of Jung, the kind of book one might read many times over at different stages of life. Published posthumously, this book carries a complicated story: it almost never got published; it is presented as an autobiography but was only loosely written by Jung, himself – and with those parts being highly redacted and edited besides. We will read MDR alongside an actual biography – Jung: A Biography by Deirdre Bair – to better understand Jung’s historical context, personal history and social milieu. This helps us to delve deeper into the important sections and ideas of this text which, by itself, put me on the path to becoming an analyst.
