At a crossroads in his life, Craig Foster set off into the sea, and in that immersion, was initiated into a more expansive and amorous way of being in the world, senses fully open, his purpose for living renewed. He documented in film his unfolding relationship with an octopus and her underwater landscape. His story illuminates psyche’s ability to organically constellate archetypal processes of healing and individuation, when we follow its call.  We will look at the elements that gave form to his journey of soul, and ponder together the mystery of what happened to him in this strange and moving encounter with the octopus.

Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris)

Bring your readiness for reflection and feeling responsiveness to the film, and we will explore together what we can learn from Craig Foster’s journey.

What does it mean to fall in love with the wild?
How do we allow ourselves to be changed by the intelligence of soul?
How does a perspective that centers the soul lead us into our place in the world?

Jung, Picasso and The Genius Archetype – Part I with Olga Turcotte, MIM

Date – September 14th, 2024
Time –  1 pm – 3 pm
Cost – $60
On Zoom

P. Picasso, Child with Dove, 1901

Jung and Picasso were contemporaries, two geniuses in their respective fields, who had the ability to delve into the collective unconscious and bring out its contents in a meaningful and relatable form. Their ideas and works deeply reflected the Zeitgeist.

Join us to look at some of Picasso’s art from a Jungian point of view. Everything this genius created can be labelled as a masterpiece, but in the interest of our limited time, we will focus on those richest in  symbolism and archetypal imagery (Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, 1907, and Guernica, 1937, amongst a few others).

No prior knowledge of Picasso’s or Jung’s works is required.

All relevant material will be provided; just bring along your curious minds!

Olga E. Turcotte is a lecturer based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the current Public Programs Director at the Institute. She has lived and studied in seven countries and has worked in the fields of corporate finance, non-profit management, consulting and education. Her areas of focus are literature, religion and symbolism.

From Medieval Alchemy to Jungian Psychology, Part II, with Kaye Lindauer, MS, MLS, M.Div

Date – September 18, 2024
Time –  7 pm – 9 pm
Cost – $60
On Zoom

Join us in our second, yet stand-alone seminar to learn more about Jung & Alchemy!

Carl Jung discovered that a metaphoric look at the process of the transformation of metals, as it was understood by the alchemist, illuminated his own work on psychological development and individuation process.

A historic overview of alchemy will continue to lead into an exploration of core concepts of Jungian psychology in our seminar. Additional illustrations from alchemical text and symbolic images will be included as part of our second presentation.

The alchemists used the phrase ‘as above so below, as below, so above’ and believed in a unified force in all aspects of nature. Philosophy, science, and psychology will continue to come together in Ms. Lindauer’s insightful and unique presentation.

Kaye Lindauer, MS, MLS, M.Div., has had an interest in literature and psychology for the last fifty years. She has taught at the graduate level, as well as adult education courses and has coordinated conferences and retreats. For the last thirty plus years she has taught at the Chautauqua Institute in New York State. Dickinson’s and Jung’s writings on soul and the dualities of life have been a focused interest of Kaye’s. Ms. Lindauer has attended and studied at numerous programs in Ireland, Switzerland and the US on Jungian psychology.

The Art of The Dream, with William J. Ventimiglia, D. Min.

Date – September 28th, 2024
Time-  10 am – 3 pm
Cost- $120
In-person seminar

What is a dream?  In his Zarathustra Seminar Jung opines: “…our dreams are like windows that allow us to look in . . .  to that psychological process which is continually going on in our unconscious.”  What does this window reveal?  The dream is an aesthetic creation of the unconscious emerging from the trends of conscious everyday living against the backdrop of timeless and archetypal imperatives of the objective psyche.  Two intentionalities are at play—that of the ego and that of the Self.  There is a balance that dreams portend—a possibility of walking more securely along our authentic path.  The focus of this brief seminar will be a presentation of basic and essential skills useful in the art of dream interpretation as practiced by C.G. Jung and M.L. von Franz.

Wm. J. Ventimiglia, D.Min. is a graduate of the C.G. Jung Institute of Zürich with a long career practicing classical Jungian analysis in a hybrid modality with post-Freudian and contemporary trends in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

C.G. Jung & Alcoholics Anonymous with Charles R. Fox, O.D, Ph.D.

Date – Saturday, October 26th, 2024
Time-  2 pm – 4 pm
Cost- $90
In person – Space is limited

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a 2 million member international mutual aid fellowship to help members achieve and maintain sobriety. While studies of AA’s efficacy have produced inconsistent results, it is undeniable that Alcoholics Anonymous has had a significant and long term effect on American and international culture.

Jung’s influence on the founding of AA is not widely known; his influence is interesting for two main reasons. First, it is rare that a failed clinical intervention has such an impact on the world. Next, it suggests that we need to be widely interdisciplinary in our understanding of health & wellness.

This thesis will be expanded & explored during the presentation.

*Some learning objectives to be met at the end of each seminar

1)    To understand C. G. Jung’s Influence on the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous.

2)    To trace this influence from Jung’s unsuccessful clinical case through other non-clinical experiences to this case’s ultimate influence on the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous.

3)    To understand the value of interdisciplinary approaches to clinical cases such as substance abuse.

Charles R. Fox, O.D., Ph.D., a psychologist and systems neuroscientist, is Professor of Psychology with Worcester State University. He earned the Ph.D. from Brandeis University and the O.D. from New England College of Optometry. He has held fellowships from NASA, Fight-For-Sight, and NIH. He has published book chapters and research articles on space perception and spatial orientation, rehabilitation & clinical care, history of psychology and, most recently on Consciousness Science. This most recent work, which is influenced by a decade of work with Jungian John Ryan Haule, includes the impact of psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung on the modern world and the neuroscience underlying his work.

Jung, Chagall and The Genius Archetype- Part II with Olga Turcotte, MIM

Date – November 23, 2024
Time –  1 pm – 3 pm
Cost – $60
On Zoom

Join us in our second, yet stand-alone seminar on Jung and the genius archetype, where we are going to look at and discuss some of Marc Chagall’s paintings from a Jungian point of view.

Marc Chagall, I and the Village, 1911

Mark Chagall (1887-1985), an almost-contemporary of Jung, is considered one of the greatest image-makers of the 20th century.

He was a lonesome visionary, a citizen of the world, a stranger lost in his inner and also sometimes outer world.

Chagall’s use of the canvas to express the inner so as to make sense of the outer, using simple-looking yet symbol-loaded images, is a prime example of how the unconscious works to help us find a balance, and hopefully some meaning, between the two worlds.

No prior knowledge of Chagall’s or Jung’s works is required. All relevant material will be provided; just bring along your curious minds!
